Reading your HOP Transactions
This reference guide shows how different types of transactions appear in your online transaction history.
To view your HOP card transactions online you must first log into your account on the myhop.co.nz homepage. The transaction history shows the following columns (you can sort these according to your preference):
Transaction type – bus travel, top-up or retail spend
Date and time of transaction
Description – a summary of the transaction
Cost – the cost of the transaction
E-Money Balance – a running total of your e-money balance
Topping up
Travel
Shopping with your e-money
Special cases (penalty, transfer and extension fares, IOUs and pending transactions)
Topping up
Top up with e-money
If you have loaded a top-up onto your HOP card, this is shown in the ‘Type’ column and will be listed as ‘Top up’.
The ‘Cost’ column shows the amount of credit added to your HOP card. The ‘e-Money Balance’ column shows the total balance on your card including the addition of the new top up amount in the ‘Cost’ column. (The 25 cent top up fee will be deducted automatically.)
The CR next to the amount in the ‘Cost’ column indicates a Credit.

10 Trip Multi Journey top-up
For a 10 Trip multi journey top-up, the e-money balance will stay the same, while the ‘Cost’ column will increase showing the amount of your 10 Trip ticket.
The ‘Description’ column will show the type of ticket e.g. Adult or Student, the number of stages e.g. 1 Stage or 2 Stage and MJ which identifies it as a multi journey product.

Travel
Travel using e-money
The ‘Type’ column shows the mode of transport used, e.g. ‘Bus’
The ‘Time’ column shows when you tagged onto the bus and when you tagged off the bus.
The ‘Description’ column shows the location where you caught the bus and the location of where you got off the bus.
The ‘Cost’ column shows the total cost of the bus fare for that trip.
The ‘e-Money balance’ column will show your e-money balance after the cost of the bus fare for this trip has been deducted.
Travel using a 10 Trip Multi Journey
When 10 Trip is used to travel, the cost of the bus fare is shown as $0.00.This is because when purchasing the 10 Trip ticket you have already pre-paid for all of the trips.
The ‘Type’ column shows the mode of transport used e.g. ‘Bus’
The ‘Time’ column shows when you tagged onto the bus and when you tagged off the bus.
The ‘Description’ column shows the location where you caught the bus and the location of where you got off the bus.
The ‘e-Money balance’ column will be unchanged.

Shopping with your e-Money
When you use your HOP card to make purchases, the ‘Type’ column will show as Retail.
The cost of the purchase will show in the ‘Cost’ column.
The ‘e-Money balance’ will show the balance after the cost of the purchase has been deducted.

Special cases
Penalty Fares
You will incur a penalty fare if you do not tag off before alighting.
When this happens it will show in the ‘Description’ column as “Failure to tag off. Penalty: Full trip fee”
The ‘Cost’ column will show the amount of the penalty fare applied to your card.
The ‘e-Money balance’ column will show the balance after the penalty fare has been deducted.
Penalty fares are only deducted from the e-money balance on your card and not from 10 Trip balance. If there is no available e-money balance when a penalty fare is applied, an IOU amount will result.

Extension Fares
If you over travel on your 10 Trip multi journey pass e.g. travel 3 stages on a 2 stage pass, an ‘extension fare’ is charged
When this happens the ‘Description’ column will show where you got on the bus and where you got off the bus. The ‘Cost’ column will show the ‘Extension Fare’. Extension fares only occur when travelling further than the stages that you loaded on a 10 Trip multi journey. The ‘Extension fare’ is deducted from e-money.
Usually the cost of the 10 Trip travel is $0.00, so having a cost in that column shows you that there was an extension fare charged.
Your e-money balance will show the balance after the extension fare has been deducted.

Transfer Fares
When your bus trip is along a designated transfer bus route (meaning it is split between two buses and you have to transfer from one bus to another at a designated transfer station), this will be shown as two separate bus trips.
Each bus trip will show in your ‘Cost’ column as the full fare but then there will be another line applying the transfer credit to your ‘e-Money balance’ column.

IOU balances
If your ‘e-Money balance’ is less than the cost of your trip, the difference will be remembered as an IOU.
You will need to clear any IOU balances with a mimimum top up of $10 or by the value of the IOU amount (plus the 25c top up transaction fee), whichever is greater.

Pending transactions
Transactions that the system is still processing show in your transaction history ‘Type’ column as pending. When data becomes available to the system, the missing details are populated.
