HOP Child & Secondary Student Concession

Do you need to renew the concession?

If your child is under 16 and you have previously applied through the online form or paper form, the Child concession will expire at their 16th birthday. If you have not previously applied, the concession expiry was set to 31 March 2013 and you will need to complete an application so that Auckland Transport can update the expiry to their 16th birthday.

For Secondary students who applied in 2012, the concession expiry was set to 31 March 2013 and you will need to apply, with the 2013 Secondary ID card, in order to have the expiry extended to 31 March 2014. If your child is turning 16 during this school year, you will need to apply for a Secondary concession at least 10 days prior to their 16th birthday in order to ensure that the concession is updated in time.

An adult HOP card can have a tertiary concession loaded onto it

Secondary Student concession

From the age of 16 to 20, children are entitled to a concession if they continue to attend secondary school. They will need to show an AT Student ID card to apply for a Secondary Student concession on their HOP card.

Students turning 16 during 2013 will need to complete a 'Secondary Student' form and submit it with a copy of their AT Student ID card (expiry 31 March 2014) to enable the card to be renewed for the full year and not just until their 16th birthday.

Children over 16 who no longer attend school will need to pay an adult fare, unless they are attending one of the approved tertiary institutes, in which case they can apply for a Tertiary HOP concession.

It will take 10 working days, from the time your application is received, for it to be processed and for the concession profile to be activated on your card.

The card is an Adult HOP card, but once the Child or Secondary concession is loaded, the card will be embedded with a Child or Secondary Student profile. This means that you will pay discounted fares until the profile expires.
