HOP Accessible Card

Renewals for HOP Accessible Cards

The validity of the HOP Accessible Card is tied in with the renewal process for Total Mobility cards. Now that is completed, you are able to renew your HOP Accessible card. The deadline for this to be completed by is 30 September 2011.

Renewals can be done the following ways:

  • At the HOP counter at Britomart, New Lynn or Newmarket
  • Total Mobility cardholders can phone 366 4 HOP (366 4467)
  • RNZFB members can phone 0800 24 3333 (the RNZFB call centre)
  • Bulk renewals can be made on behalf of customers, however all the above details will be required for each HOP Accessible card to be renewed to enable the process to be completed.

The renewal process is free, but you to need to allow 5 working days for it to be completed. If you do not renew in enough time before 30 September 2011, you will be charged adult fares until the renewal process is complete.

When you renew you will need:

  • Your TM Photo ID card or your RNZFB membership card
  • Your HOP Accessible Card

Once renewed, your HOP Accessible Card will be valid until your RNZFB or TM card expires.

Eligibility for a HOP Accessible Card

The HOP Accessible Card entitles passengers who are disabled or have an impairment, and hold one of the following ID cards listed below, to concessionary fares.

One of the following photo ID cards must be provided upon application for the HOP Accessible card:

  • Auckland Transport Total Mobility ID Card
  • Royal NZ Foundation of the Blind (RNZFB) ID card

What does the card look like?

The Accessible card is light blue with a round purple HOP logo on the left side. There is a dark sticker at the top of the card with ‘ACCESSIBLE’ printed on it and a small white Snapper logo in the top right hand corner.

A 16-digit individual card number is printed at the bottom of the card and there is a three digit security code to the right of this. To stop anyone using your card if you lose it you must use these numbers to register the card online.

People with low vision won’t be able to register their card online yet as the current security filter is not screen reader friendly. Our team is currently testing an alternative to this and we will advise when this has been sorted out.

Here is an example of the card:

Where to top up your HOP Card

Once you have got your HOP Card you will need to top it up with one of HOP’s 2 products, e-money and 10 Trip. This can be done at any retailer that has HOP or Snapper signs on display. There is a 25c fee for topping up with e-money, but no fee for topping up with 10 Trip.

HOP’s retail network is growing all the time and there is a retailer search facility on the website which is updated every day as accessible HOP cards arrive in stores across Auckland.

Using the card on the bus

There are card readers at the front and rear of the bus, positioned on the right on the rail as you get on the bus, (so it is opposite where you normally bought tickets or inserted your Go Rider card).

Tag On - When you enter the bus you will need to touch your HOP Card to the reader at the front of the bus. The card reader is at a good height if you wear your card on a lanyard and with the machine being on the rail, there’s something to hold on to if you need it.  You need to hold your card close to the reader. There will be two beeps and a green circle will display with the word ‘PASS’ – you can then enter the bus. A mechanical voice helpfully reminds you to tag off and also lets you know when your balance gets below $12 (the audible message will say ‘balance is low’ and the screen will show the same message). This is when you need to go and put more money or trips on your card.

Tag Off - When you leave the bus you will need to touch your card to the reader at the front or rear of the bus. The reader will display a green circle and the fare charged for the journey. This is known as tagging off.  It is very important to ensure you Tag Off each time, otherwise you will be charged a penalty fare. It is a good idea to wear your HOP Card on a lanyard around your neck as this makes it easier to remember to tag off. You can also check your balance on this website if you have registered your card.

Tagging on and off makes the journey easier than before, especially where communication may have been an issue.

There is a video available which takes you through each step of the process – click on this link

The card reader will also provide you with a visual and audible cue if your balance is below a certain amount - less than $12 of e-money, or less than 7 trips remaining on your 10 Trip balance. The reader will show the balance of your card (only if the balance is less than $12), and there will be a double beep along with a spoken message to 'Please check your balance'.

Discounts

Compared to a cash fare, the HOP Accessible Card offers at least a 10% discount.
